September 19 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Depot open days: design classics

Museum Depot, Acton

Event description

Join us this September for a weekend of fun and creativity – don’t miss the final Museum Depot open days of the year.

London transport’s design heritage is world-famous – but what about the people and stories behind those iconic creations? From Charles Holden’s architectural vision to Harry Beck’s revolutionary Tube map and Enid Marx’s bold Tube seating fabric or ‘moquette’ patterns, discover the names that shaped the look and feel of London.

The Museum Depot is a treasure trove of transport history, usually closed to the public. Spend the day exploring our storehouse and discover our unique stories.

What’s happening

  • Hands-on fun: get creative with design-themed drop-in activities designed for all ages
  • Unique historic items: explore the sign mezzanine, home to historic Underground maps, and see the evolution of the Underground logo
  • Interactive demos: join live demos and expert talks exploring the development of transport design
  • Creative minds welcome: step into the stunning art-deco-styled 1938 stock train, and marvel at the RM1 bus prototype with its distinctive design features
  • SEND-friendly hours: designed for visitors with additional needs, including visitors with special educational needs and disabled visitors

From moquette to roundels, LEGO-inspired maps to the legendary brand, design is woven into every part of London’s transport history. With activities for all ages, this is your chance to celebrate creativity, history and design.
